My state's rules

What your state's own sources say, copied by you from your state's page on Rules and Record and its safeguards notice, with the date you read them. Seeded with your state from setup; everything else you type.

For a first pass, this sheet is essential, and on a first pass four lines are enough: the Rules and Record page, the date its sources were last checked, one parent center, and the state's name for prior written notice. Those are what Your state's rules asks for. The dispute routes line matters when something is not working (When you disagree); the rest can wait. A reader who skips the sheet has to go back to the state page each time a chapter asks what the state says.

My state

Copy each answer from your state's Rules and Record page or its safeguards notice (Your state's rules), in the page's words where you can, with a page number. Write "not stated" where the page says the sources do not address it. The page changes; your copy is dated so you know when you read it.

How to use this sheet

  • Copy, do not summarize. Write each answer in the words of your state's page or notice, with a page number where the notice has one. A paraphrase drifts; a quotation can be checked.
  • Date everything. Rules and Record re-checks state sources and records changes in a change log. Your copy says what the page said on the day you read it, so write that day in the last field.
  • Write "not stated" when the page says so. Many state pages record that their sources state nothing on a question, such as recording a meeting. That finding is worth writing down; it tells you the question goes to the district.
  • Keep district questions separate. When the state leaves a question to the district, write it in the district field and ask it in writing.
Fictional example

This sheet has no example rows, because every answer must come from your own state's page on the day you read it. In Your state's rules, Ada Okafor (fictional) fills hers from the Pennsylvania page: the NOREP as the state's prior written notice form, ConsultLine as the parent helpline, the PEAL Center among the parent centers, and recording "not stated in the sources reviewed."

Limits

This sheet holds your copy of what your state's sources say. It does not say which rule applies to your child or how a state office would read it; the state's offices, the parent center listed on your state page, or an attorney answer that. When the state page's change log shows a change, read the page again and update the sheet with the new date.
